ANDREW SINCLAIR – stage director

Andrew Sinclair stage director at the Royal Opera Covent Garden since 1986 with Die Fledermaus.  Then Lohengrin, Aida, Tosca, Die Zauberfloete, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, Werther, Tannhauser, Peter Grimes, Tosca and Rosenkavalier. A semi-staging of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Royal Albert Hal.  Italian debut Verdi’s I masnadieri Teatro Comunale of Bologna.

Mr. Sinclair debuted in the US at San Diego Opera in 2001 with Lohengrin. With designer Zandra Rhodes Bizet’s Les Pecheurs de Perles in 2004 for San Diego Opera successfully revived for Michigan Opera Theater, San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, Opera Colorado, L’Opera de Montreal, Minnesota Opera and Pittsburgh Opera. He subsequently staged, Lucia di Lammermoor, La Traviata, La boheme, Tosca, Aida, Maria Stuarda and La Traviata with San Diego Opera and La Boheme with Opera Colorado. Mr. Sinclair has produced Norma for San Francisco Opera and Le Nozze di Figaro for Seattle Opera and Lohengrin at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. He was a guest stage director at Indiana University for L’elisir d’amore in July 2007. Andrew Sinclair made a very successful debut with Lyric Opera of Chicago with the production of Lohengrin in 2011 and will return to Michigan Opera Theater with his production of Les Pecheurs de Perles in April/May 2012. He returns to San Diego for Aida in 2012 and Pagliacci in 2013.

The Australian native produced Peter Grimes, Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci for Opera Australia.  Mr. Sinclair debuted with Australian Opera in 1981 directing La Boheme and The Bartered Bride. From 1983 to 1985 he was Principal Resident Director of the company, during which time he staged Otello and Die Walkuere as well as das Rheingold, Tosca, Un Ballo in Maschera, The Consul, Figaro, Peter Grimes and Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci plus La Boheme, which was taped for video and won an Emmy Award in 1989. He has directed for the opera companies in Christchurch and Wellington, New Zealand.

Mr. Andrew Sinclair made a very successful debut with Lyric Opera of Chicago with the production of Lohengrin in 2011 and will return to Michigan Opera Theater with his production of Les Pecheurs de Perles in April/May 2012. He returns to San Diego for Aida in 2012 and Pagliacci in 2013.
