Jonathan Boyd - Tenor

 

Jonathan Boyd, a native of Corning New York, consistently performs to great acclaim in Europe, North America and South America. Opera News hailed his Roméo in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette as “…physically and vocally suited for the role, acting with assurance and singing with an easy lyricism.” Mr. Boyd’s 2018 season will begin with his role debut of Lensky in Eugene Onegin as he returns to l’Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole and makes his company debut with l’Opéra de Reims. Mr. Boyd has also been engaged for the title role Faust with Portland Opera and make his LA Symphony Debut. Mr Boyd opens the 2019 season in the role of Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata with Portland Opera.

Mr. Boyd’s noted international engagements include the title role Werther in his company debut with Scottish National Opera and in the same role for a live HD stream broadcast from Teatro Colón in Argentina. Mr. Boyd’s company debuts with l’Opéra de Nice, l’Opéra de Toulon and Teatro Colón where all in the role of Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His role debut of Peter Quint in Turn of the Screw was with Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse. In his company debut with Opera di Firenze Maggio Musicale, he was heard in the role of Le Prince in L’Amour Des Trois Oranges. For his role and company debut with l’Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole, he was heard as Anatol in Vanessa. Malta National Theater and Festival Lyrique-en-mer de Belle Île were his company debuts for Tamino in Die Zauberflöte. Mr. Boyd’s company debuts with Opera Faber in Portugal, Théâtre de l’Athénée and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines in France were with his signature role of Tom Rakewell in The Rake’s Progress. In the role of Alfredo in La Traviata with Akouna, l’Opéra en Plein Air, Mr. Boyd was heard by thousands in the outdoor performance at Le Sénat in Parc Luxemburg of Paris.

Mr. Boyd’s Noted North American engagements from recent seasons include Narraboth in Strauss’ Salome after his previous debut with Pittsburgh Opera in the role of Heurtebise in Orphée by Philip Glass. Mr. Boyd made his company debuts with Seattle Opera as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with The Atlanta Opera and with Austin Lyric Opera in the title role of Faust. Mr. Boyd made multiple appearances with San Francisco Opera which included Falstaff, Turandot, The Merry Widow (released on DVD), and Mother of Us All.

Mr. Boyd’s Noted contemporary works include the role of Greenhorn in Jake Heggie’s Moby Dick in his San Diego Opera début, the Grammy Award winning opera Elmer Gantry in the role of Frank Shallard in Florentine Opera’s most recent production; Michigan Opera Theatre’s world première of Margaret Garner as George Hancock; New York City Opera’s productions of Mother of Us All and Central Park; the role of Sam in Susannah with l’Opera de Montreal; and the role of Sam in Street Scene with Portland Opera where he returned to sing the title role of Candide. Composer Lee Hoiby personally chose Mr. Boyd to create the role of Romeo in his opera Romeo and Juliet; subsequently Mr. Boyd had the honor of performing selections of it at the Opera America convention in Vancouver, as well as with New York City Opera, Stamford Symphony in Connecticut, and the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center. The full work has yet to be produced.

Mr. Boyd’s concert appearances have included the New York Philharmonic in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion conducted by Maestro Kurt Masur and the Philadelphia Orchestra in a recording of Pagliacci with Maestro Riccardo Muti. Additionally, Mr. Boyd has performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Opéra de Rouen Haute Normandie, Britten’s War Requiem for Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Forth Worth Symphony, Haydn’s Creation with the Choral Arts Society at the Kennedy Center, Mozart’s Requiem at Carnegie Hall, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater with Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, Rachmaninoff’s Vespers with the Choral Arts Society in Washington D.C., Mozart’s Solemn Vespers at Carnegie Hall and Händel’s Messiah with Philharmonia Baroque cunducted by Maestro Nicholas McGegan. With I Musici de Montréal Mr. Boyd was heard in Finzi’s Dies Natalis and Britten’s Les Illuminations. With Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra as well as in a live TV broadcast with Virginia Symphony he was heard in the role of Mozart, in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri.
