Bulgarian soprano, Zvetelina Vassileva, was born on 20 November 1966 in Etropole. Zvetelina Vassileva gained her diploma from the Sofia Musical Academy staudying with Konstanza Vachkova. Her studies continued in Italy, where she won the 1992 International Tito Shipa Competition and 1993 Francesco Cilea Competition. She was also a recipient of a scholarship from the Friends of La Scala, which entitled her to study with celebrated tenor Carlo Bergonzi.
Zvetelina Vassileva made her debut at the Varna International Festival as Liu. Her operatic stage debut was made with the Bulgarian National Opera in Sofia as Amelia /Un Ballo in Maschera/, where subsequent engagements included Leonora /Il Trovatore/, Micaela, Desdemona, Liu, Elisabetta /Don Carlo/. Other European engagements have included Judith /Bluebeard's Castle/ at La Monnaie, Brussels, Desdemona, Marenka /The Bartered Bride/ at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Gala Opera in Albert Hall, and she has also appeared with Scottish Opera as Leonora and Verdi's Giovanna d'Arco, also in Berlin Staatsoper as Mimi. She made her operatic debut in the United States with San Francisco Opera as Leonora, and returned the following season to sing Gorislava in the company premiere of "Ruslan and Ludmila". Her subsequent North American operatic engagements include appearances in West Palm Beach, Michigan, Detroit, Cincinnati, Toronto, Baltimore, Opera Pacific - California and Houston Grand Opera, where she sang Yaroslavna /Prince Igor/, Tatiana and Aida.
She sang under A. Guadagno, M. Arena, D. Oren, B. Heiting, C. Rizzi, M. Armiliato, N. Luisotti, P. Jordan, Licata, Y. Mercl, A. Fischer, Chaslin, Delacote, R. Armstrong, J. De Main, S. Mercurio, Zagroszeg, Ed. Muller, P. Summers and many others. In addition to her operatic activity, she has given concert performances in Russia, France, Italy, Poland, Bulgaria and the Netherlands.
Recent seasons have included performances in La Traviata, La Boheme and Il Trovatore at the Metropolitan Opera in New York; Tosca with the Prague State Opera and Madison Opera; Tatyana with Kentucky Opera; Mimi on tour in Japan with National Opera Sofia; Amelia in Toronto and Thessaloniki, Greece; Leonora in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Santander, Seville and for Opera Pacific, California; Violetta in Baltimore as well as in National Opera Sofia, where she also sang Nedda, Elisabetta, Verdi Requiem and Liu in Japan.
Zvetelina Vassileva’s performances in recent seasons have included Desdemona Otello and Leonora in Il trovatoreat San Francisco Opera and Royal Opera Covent Garden, Mimi La Boheme at the Berlin State Opera, the title role of Aida at the Bavarian State Opera and Houston Grand Opera, and ViolettaLa Traviata and Amelia Un ballo in maschera at the Metropolitan Opera. Her Boheme in Berlin earned praise from Opera Magazine, “she was bold where necessary and at the big moments took vocal risks—successfully.” She appeared recently with the Wichita Grand Opera as Matilde in Rossini’s William Tell , the Contessa Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro as Puccini’s Tosca and the title role in Turandot. In the current 15-16 season she sings the title role in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreurand Leonora in Verdi’s Il trovatore at the National Opera in Sofia and Elisabetta in Verdi’s Don Carlos.
